Skill #2 – Perspective Taking: Understanding others point of view

Perspective taking involves the intellectual skills of:

  • Discerning how someone else thinks and feels;
  • Assembling our accumulated knowledge of that person;
  • Analyzing the situation at hand;
  • Remembering similar situations;
  • Recalling what others have told us about such situations; and
  • Trying to feel and think as another person must feel and think. (p.71)

This is a Mini-Message by Dr. Darlene Clemens, summarizing one topic from Mind in the Making, by Ellen Galinksy. With permission of Ms. Galinsky to Dr. Clemens, and of Dr. Clemens to Mark Baumann.
