Hostage negotiators are trained to handle intense situations and emotions. Learn their secrets from a former Seattle Police Department hostage negotiator. Trained by the FBI and with decades of experience, Bruce Wind will share his secrets in the first 60 minutes of this seminar. A panel of three lawyers, Joe Shaub, Molly Kenny and Mark Baumann, all experienced with high conflict cases will discuss how the techniques can be used in litigation, counseling and mediation environments.

BRUCE WIND was a Seattle Police Officer for 36-years. Besides the everyday conflicts of patrol work, he was a hostage/crisis negotiator for over a quarter of a century. Suicide interventions, barricaded suspects, hostage-takings and intervention with the mentally ill in crisis are all a common occurrence of the police negotiator. The ability to manipulate people’s decision making process is an art form and now in retirement, Bruce shares the verbal skills he used on a daily basis as a police crisis negotiator. In today’s Law Enforcement environment theses skills are more important than ever before. Bruce’s post law enforcement career includes teaching active listening skills to first responders and sharing stories of his 36-years in a patrol car. Bruce is a graduate of the FBI’s Crisis Negotiation Course and a qualified instructor in numerous aspects of police work.
MARK BAUMANN, program chair, is a family law litigator and mediator, since 1988. He specializes in high conflict work, and client counseling from a client-centered and relational neurobiology perspective. Mark is an associate of the High Conflict Institute, is currently pursuing a graduate certificate in interpersonal neurobiology, is a member of the WSBA ADR executive committee, a co-founder of Washington Low Bono Professionals, and a tribal court judge pro tem. He has written articles and presented in the N.W. on managing high conflict cases in litigation and mediation.
JOSEPH SHAUB is an attorney and licensed marriage and family therapist practicing in Bellevue. He was admitted to the bar in California in 1974 and in Washington in 1995. Joe has been a marriage and family therapist since 1991. His practice focuses on provision of mediation services as well as individual and couples counseling. He has presented numerous talks and workshops to attorney’s including Dealing with High Conflict Parties and Their Attorneys; Systems Thinking in Mediation and Communication Skills for the Family Lawyer. He has taught Interviewing and Counseling for Lawyers at U.W. Law School since 2000.
MOLLY KENNY has practiced law for more than 30 years in many different areas. She has practiced family law for the last 13 years and feels this area is the best fit for her and now focuses her practice primarily in this area. She has extensive trial and ADR experience. She is an avid student of conflict and conflict resolution along with human development. This helps expand her ability to effectively problem solve for her clients. She has presented at CLE’s for the WSBA and King County Bar Association, has been interviewed on radio and TV, and has written articles on conflict and litigation including “Does it take two to tango? Not always” for the WSBA Bar News.
